tips we learned at our Apr. 5 2010 meeting

Posted by admin on 09 Apr 2010 | Tagged as: get-together updates

Late summer/early fall
Plant large plants early in the season so they will be established before the cold weather arrives; last month to prune is September; be sure plants are free of insects of fungus
Before the freeze, frost or temperatures in the mid thirties to freezing
Watch weather reports, water plants and lawn but turn off irrigation; move container plants indoor and/or cover plants with sheets/plant coverings and tuck in sides
After the cold
Remove covers and monitor soil moisture
In the spring
Cut back plants damaged from freeze back to new growth after the last full moon in February; Fertilize and monitor insect and fungus problems

Next meeting, May 3, 2010, the topic will be ‘how to convert your sprinkler system to a micro sprinkler system’.

here is an update on the cutting I received in February.
All leaves dropped, but new ones are growing fast:

Anyone else want to show their cuttings?

I followed instructions learned at the Rose seminar by Eric. I see new growth on all of my roses :)
One rose bush had a plump bud and I just could not bring myself to prune it off. I figured I’ll prune this branch back after the flower is done with.

here it is now, ‘Belinda’s Dream’, one of my favorite roses:
