Yard of the Month Guidelines

The purpose of the YOM is to maintain and improve the appearance of our community by promoting well-kept yards. One winner each month will receive an award and a gift certificate, and will proudly display a "Yard of the Month" sign in their yard for a month. A picture of the winning yard will also be posted on the Avalon Park website. Every effort will be made to rotate the winners among the entire association. Each homeowner/renter is invited to participate.

Winning Yard of the Month Criteria

For the "Yard of the Month" Award, certain criteria will be considered by the Avalon Park Garden Club.

  • Landscapes are required to be
    • Well groomed (properties can have a natural, wildscape appearance, but grass must be healthy, mowed, and the perimeter of the property must be edged).
    • Attractive & pleasing to the eye (eg. green lawn; a variety of plants such as trees, shrubs, ground cover, flowers, wildflowers; plants with a variety of heights, textures, and colors; landscape features such as fountains, large rocks in beds, etc.)
    • Plants must be healthy
    • Minimum weeds in flower beds
    • Buildings, fences, porches, patios and other structures on the property are required to be in good repair, i.e. minimal distraction from the landscape due to deterioration, damage or construction.
    • Extra consideration may given to properties that have invested extra effort through the use of attractive art pieces such as pottery, ironwork, potted plants, birdhouses, patio or lawn furniture, etc.
    • All selected properties must be free of litter, junk and debris.
  • Winner must be in good standing with the POA. This will be verified thru the POA Board.
  • One home will be selected each month.
  • Each yard/home will be limited to winning the award only once in any calendar year.
  • Only the front/side yards as viewed from the street will be judged. Backyards will not be considered.
  • All plantings must be living, no plastic, silk or artificial plants.
  • Avalon Park Garden Club selection team members are not eligible.
  • Avalon Park Garden Club will judge, determine, and select the Yard of the Month by the end of the month prior to the award being given. Anyone can nominate a yard by contacting the Avalon Park POA or via the contact page on www.AvalonParkGardenClub.com Name of nominated as well as address and reason why must be given when nominating.
  • Winner must be willing to have a picture of yard taken and published
  • Yard of the Month signs will be placed in the winning yards on the first day of the month, to remain the entire month. This will be done by members of the Avalon Park Garden Club.
  • Judges decisions are final.
